Nobori Sushi...Wow, Wow, and Wow!

So as you can see, I have not been too diligent in updating this blog. However, there has been a recent sushi experience that has prompted me to dine there twice in one week AND write to tell the world about it.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned this place to me before??? I've been craving sushi lately, but to my dismay, I haven't had much luck in finding a great sushi place that is also reasonably priced. The two seemed to be mutually exclusive. I have recently had a couple mishaps with sushi...Benihana in Wheeling and Wildfish in Deerfield...Let's just say that if you don't have anything good to say, then you shouldn't say anything at all. So I've all but given up hope, and was just browsing online to see if I could find a sushi restaurant coupon just to satisfy my sushi urge. Came across Nobori Sushi and it was relatively close to work, browsed menu online, seemed decent. Off I go.

SIMPLY AMAZING.

The restaurant is rather small and definitely not "trendy," but it is perfect for couples and small families. I have read that the owner is usually the main server in the restaurant and he is friendly and attentive. The fish is as fresh as can be and just absolutely delicious. And the sushi chefs know exactly the perfect ratio of rice to fish. This place is so great that I went for the first time on Monday this week, and went again on Saturday.

Here are some pointers that I have learned on this magical sushi journey. Don't order any of the sushi dinner combos as you cannot substitute the items. And skip the California roll. One option is to just order straight off their sushi menu. $5 for most traditional maki, $6.50 for most inside out rolls. They also have special rolls, but those range from $15 to $17! Ouch. You may also custom create a roll that is not listed on their sushi roll sheet, but expect to pay a premium. Also, they have soy paper, so if you are someone that can't or wont eat seaweed, that's a great option for you to enjoy sushi without the seaweed. Another option is to order their $9.95 anytime special that is posted on a flyer in the restaurant. You cannot use a coupon with the special, but the special is a very good deal in and of itself. You get a choice of soup or salad, then choose a roll and 4 nigiri sushi from a special selection, which is quite expansive. The savings over ordering a la cart is approximately $6.50. That's about 40% off.

So as you can see, I think this place is just super. Keep up the great work Mr. Nakamura!

Wow...seems like I have been busy...2nd half of 2008 movies

So it appears that it has been awhile since I updated this blog. In June of 2008, I had gotten a new in-house counsel job and that seems to have kept me quite busy for the past nine or so months. In the meantime, I have seen several movies on the big screen, although most people will not agree with my movie taste.

I saw the Dark Knight and thought that while it was good, it was not great. The movie was much too long, with long and drawn out lulls. And they should have just ended the movie 30 minutes sooner...the Two-Face plot could have finished out in a sequel...just was too anticlimactic. Iron Man is still my favorite blockbuster movie of 2008. My favorite comedy of 2008 is Tropic Thunder...I could not stop laughing pretty much throughout the entire show. House Bunny was funny in a Legally Blonde/Clueless kind of way. Quantum of Solace was better than I thought it was going to be. Usually not a James Bond fan (I know...blasphemy...) but this one had more action than an attempt at a bad plot, so I enjoyed it. Zach and Miri make a Porno was a good laugh too...it was a romantic comedy in a lower budget Wedding Crashers kind of way. Despite good reviews, I think Burn After Reading should have been Burn After Watching...plot was a mess and it really wasn't that funny or interesting.

The one movie that disappointed me to no end was The Day the Earth Stood Still. I actually saw it on IMAX and thought it was borderline horrible. This movie should have never been on IMAX...it's not an IMAX kind of movie...special effects, colors, visual appeal...all were not enhanced on IMAX. I've actually seen the 1950's version of this movie late night a year or two ago and thought it was much better than this remake.

So 2008 movies were a mixed bag for me. Hopefully 2009 will bring more hits than misses. I have already seen the Watchman on IMAX on opening weekend. Great film. It is a tad long at almost 3 hours, but the plot moved along quickly and there were very few slow areas. Storylines flowed well and adhered quite true to the comics. All in all, I am a fan...despite Dr. Manhattan's junk being in-your-face once in a while. On the other hand, Nite Owl II's butt was gratuitous nudity that I didn't mind seeing. ;)
