Wow...seems like I have been busy...2nd half of 2008 movies

So it appears that it has been awhile since I updated this blog. In June of 2008, I had gotten a new in-house counsel job and that seems to have kept me quite busy for the past nine or so months. In the meantime, I have seen several movies on the big screen, although most people will not agree with my movie taste.

I saw the Dark Knight and thought that while it was good, it was not great. The movie was much too long, with long and drawn out lulls. And they should have just ended the movie 30 minutes sooner...the Two-Face plot could have finished out in a sequel...just was too anticlimactic. Iron Man is still my favorite blockbuster movie of 2008. My favorite comedy of 2008 is Tropic Thunder...I could not stop laughing pretty much throughout the entire show. House Bunny was funny in a Legally Blonde/Clueless kind of way. Quantum of Solace was better than I thought it was going to be. Usually not a James Bond fan (I know...blasphemy...) but this one had more action than an attempt at a bad plot, so I enjoyed it. Zach and Miri make a Porno was a good laugh too...it was a romantic comedy in a lower budget Wedding Crashers kind of way. Despite good reviews, I think Burn After Reading should have been Burn After Watching...plot was a mess and it really wasn't that funny or interesting.

The one movie that disappointed me to no end was The Day the Earth Stood Still. I actually saw it on IMAX and thought it was borderline horrible. This movie should have never been on IMAX...it's not an IMAX kind of movie...special effects, colors, visual appeal...all were not enhanced on IMAX. I've actually seen the 1950's version of this movie late night a year or two ago and thought it was much better than this remake.

So 2008 movies were a mixed bag for me. Hopefully 2009 will bring more hits than misses. I have already seen the Watchman on IMAX on opening weekend. Great film. It is a tad long at almost 3 hours, but the plot moved along quickly and there were very few slow areas. Storylines flowed well and adhered quite true to the comics. All in all, I am a fan...despite Dr. Manhattan's junk being in-your-face once in a while. On the other hand, Nite Owl II's butt was gratuitous nudity that I didn't mind seeing. ;)
